The Me Tree for Schools is a hands-on and structured school program that promotes building resilience in students within in an academic setting. The Me Tree for Schools does more than provide a framework, it also provides schools with practical resources such as lesson plans, worksheets and activity guides for teachers to use within the classroom.
In Australia, the prevalence of mental illness in children is increasing and is commonly left untreated at this stage in life, making it the leading cause of disability in young people
The vision for The Me Tree for Schools is to reduce the mental health issues of children in Victoria. We aim to improve health and wellbeing in the population by addressing their mental health inequities, which can have adverse effects on their growth and development and has implications for continued mental health issues during teenage years and into adulthood.
Through their clinical expertise working with children, our creators Hannah and Danny Gamble, have identified that addressing mental health issues in children needs a preventative approach. We believe that to address the issue of mental health, intervention needs to occur during the childhood years. This is based on the premise that building positive mental health strategies from a young age ensures that protective factors against mental health issues increase and develop over the lifespan.
The Me Tree for Schools focuses on developing resilience and has been tailored to meet the specific needs and learning requirements of students from Prep to Year 6. Our program aims to integrate positive mental health strategies within the classroom to provide students with the skills to be able cope under pressure and develop positive self-identity. It has been designed to be implemented across the larger school population and can be utilised by students with and without additional needs or mental health issues.
The Me Tree for Schools combines the frameworks of occupational therapy, psychology and education to approach resilience in a holistic manner. We have developed our program based on the current and best practices for building resilience, as well as evidence-based research in these fields – and have refined it based on input from our advisory team of professionals who work within schools.
