CREATING A CULTURE OF RESILIENCE

COMMON LANGUAGE

For a resilience program to be effective, a common language needs to be established throughout the school. From Prep to Year 6, students are immersed in developing a growth mindset and being thankful. These are the two foundations upon which all other aspects of the program are built. It’s important therefore to develop some common language around these areas.

THANKFULNESS

Being thankful is interchanged with the term ‘digging for gold’. Students are trained to look for and find the gold in a situation, even when it’s difficult to find.

GROWTH MINDSET

In Prep to Year 2, the program uses a traffic light analogy for growth mindset. Negative thoughts are identified as ‘red’ thoughts and growth thoughts are identified as green thoughts. Students are encouraged to stop red thoughts and make green thoughts go.
In years 3-6 red thoughts take on a new name as ‘pollution’ thoughts. Students will examine the effect of pollution on trees and the environment. They will then consider the effect of pollution thoughts on their Me Tree.

TOUGH SITUATIONS

Tough situations are otherwise termed ‘stinky situations’ and likened to manure. Students are encouraged to see tough times as fertilizer opportunities for their Me Tree, to promote both growth and strength.

WHOLE SCHOOL PRACTICES

Picture
  • Staff are encouraged to model thankfulness wherever possible.
  • Each class will engage in daily thankfulness activities.
  • Every Monday morning students will engage in regulation and refocus activities. This is aimed at getting them in a ready to learn space after the weekend.
  • Regular segments in assemblies that reinforce Me Tree for Schools principles and award students practicing a Growth Mindset.
